What matters is the membrane quality, whether the SYSTEM (not just components) is NSF/ANSI certified, and the cost of the cartridges you'll actually re-buy. A genuine 3–5 stage system with real NSF 58 certification beats an uncertified '10-stage' unit.

It's measured as the drain ratio. Pumpless tank systems typically send 3–4 gallons to the drain per gallon of clean water; permeate-pump models (like the Home Master TMAFC-ERP) reach ~1:1. Advertised ratios are best-case on a new membrane with warm, low-TDS water, so real waste rises as the membrane ages and on cold or hard water.

RO strips nearly everything, including calcium and magnesium, so the water can taste flat or slightly acidic. That's cosmetic, not dangerous. If you prefer mineral taste, choose a system with a remineralization (alkaline) stage — just remember it's an extra cartridge to replace on schedule.
