The NSF Certification Decoder
"NSF certified" is not one claim — it is at least nine different claims depending on the standard number. This page is the normalized decoder table: every NSF/ANSI standard a home water filter is likely to carry, what it actually certifies, and whether it certifies lead removal. It is a reference dataset, not a buying guide — pair it with a specific product's certifier listing before you buy.
The one thing to know: The word 'certified' matters less than the NSF/ANSI standard NUMBER behind it. NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetics only (chlorine taste and odor); 53 is the health tier (lead, cadmium, mercury, VOCs, chromium-6); 58 covers reverse-osmosis systems; and 401 covers emerging contaminants like pharmaceuticals and microplastics. A filter 'NSF certified' under 42 does nothing certified for lead — so always read the number, not just the badge.

Certified vs "tested to" — the distinction that matters more than the number
Every row above assumes genuine third-party certification by an accredited body — NSF, WQA (Water Quality Association), or IAPMO R&D, all equally valid. A product that says "meets NSF/ANSI 53" or "tested to NSF standards" without naming a certifier has not been independently audited or listed anywhere public; it is a self-commissioned lab result, not a certification. Caveats — read before citing a badge
- Certification is per-contaminant, per-model. A "53 certified" badge does not mean every contaminant under 53's scope is covered on that specific unit — check the model's certified claim list.
- The badge alone is not proof. Verify any claim in the certifier's public database (NSF, WQA, or IAPMO) by product name before trusting it.
- "Tested to" is not "certified." See the section above — the difference is an accredited third-party audit versus a self-commissioned lab report.
- This table is general reference, not a health or safety verdict for any specific product or water supply. It reports what a standard number certifies, not medical outcomes.
- Standards get revised. NSF/ANSI standards are periodically updated (added contaminants, new classes); this decoder reflects the standards as understood as of the version date below.
